Solar Panels in Nottinghamshire
Looking for solar panels in Nottinghamshire? We install MCS-certified solar, battery storage and EV charging across the county — Nottingham and the suburbs and towns around it — from our East Midlands base. One firm handles the survey, the design, the installation and the aftercare, so there is a single number to ring when something needs attention.
Typical installed prices run £4,000–£10,000, and domestic solar is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, with 0% finance over 12 months on offer.
A City on a 2028 Deadline, a County of Many Roofs
Nottinghamshire is run in two layers. Nottingham City Council is a unitary authority for the city itself, while Nottinghamshire County Council covers the rest of the county alongside seven district and borough councils — Ashfield, Bassetlaw, Broxtowe, Gedling, Mansfield, Newark and Sherwood, and Rushcliffe. The city sets the pace: Nottingham City Council declared a climate emergency in 2019, and its CN28 programme aims to make Nottingham the UK's first carbon-neutral city by 2028, with solar going onto the council's own buildings and social housing.
The roofs vary street by street. The red-brick terraces of Sneinton and the Old Meadows usually take compact rear-slope arrays; Sherwood's late-Victorian and Edwardian homes, built as the lace industry grew between 1870 and 1910, often have steeper pitches that suit mid-size systems; Wollaton's mid-20th-century semis offer simple, generous roof planes. Clifton deserves its own mention: most of its houses are 'no fines' concrete rather than conventional brick, a non-standard construction our structural survey checks before any mounting design is signed off.
What Solar Costs in Nottinghamshire
Across Nottinghamshire a solar system typically costs between £4,000 and £10,000, and what moves a quote within that band is the size of the system and the type of property:
| What | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Solar panel system (size-dependent) | £4,000–£10,000 |
| Battery storage — Fox ESS (10-year warranty) | from £3,500 |
| Battery storage — SigEnergy (integrated EV charging) | from £5,000 |
| EV charger installation | £950–£1,400 |
| Air conditioning (single room) | from £1,200 installed |

Planning, Conservation Areas and Paperwork
Most Nottinghamshire houses need no planning application for solar. Roof panels on a house are permitted development in England, and sitting inside a conservation area does not alter that for roof slopes — nationally, only a wall, balcony or roof enclosure that fronts a highway is excluded. Three things can change the answer: an Article 4 direction covering your street, a flat-roof array in a conservation area (which needs the council's prior approval first), and a listed home.
Nottingham has two areas worth knowing about. Mapperley Park is a conservation area of large Victorian and Edwardian properties, and The Park Estate — the private Victorian estate west of the centre, a conservation area since 1969 with many listed houses — has its own estate management on top of council rules. We read the conservation register and any Article 4 list for your address at the free survey.
Nottinghamshire sits largely within National Grid Electricity Distribution's East Midlands licence area — the two digits at the start of the MPAN core on your bill confirm it (11 for the East Midlands). We handle the DNO notification, G98 for systems up to 3.68kW per phase or the G99 application for anything larger, before installation.

There is no general solar grant to apply for. The SEG rates guide tracks the current table, and the Octopus Flux guide covers the time-of-use tariffs that suit battery owners.
Solar in Nottinghamshire: FAQs
A typical Nottinghamshire installation costs £4,000–£10,000, depending on system size and property type: a compact array on one of Sneinton's red-brick terraces sits toward the lower end, a larger roof toward the upper end. A battery starts from £3,500 for Fox ESS (10-year warranty) or £5,000 for SigEnergy (15-year warranty, integrated EV charging). Domestic solar and batteries are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, and every quote comes from a survey of your actual roof, never a postcode average.
Usually not. Roof panels on a house are permitted development in England, and a conservation area does not by itself restrict roof slopes: the national rule only excludes panels on a wall, balcony or roof enclosure that fronts a highway. The exceptions to check are an Article 4 direction on your street, a flat-roof array in a conservation area (which needs the council's prior approval) and a listed home. We check all three at the free survey, including Nottingham's Mapperley Park and Park Estate conservation areas, and handle any application.
Our dedicated local pages cover Nottingham — solar panels, battery storage, EV chargers and Tesla Powerwall — and we survey and install across the county from our East Midlands base. Nottingham is about 15 miles from Loughborough, one of our home-patch towns, so aftercare runs on the same one-firm, one-contact basis as the rest of our patch.
There is no general solar grant. Lower-income households in EPC D–G homes may qualify for support through the Warm Homes: Local Grant, which is delivered through local councils — we can point you to the right team. Everyone else benefits from 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, Smart Export Guarantee payments for exported power, and 0% finance over 12 months.
