Solar Panels in Oxfordshire

Looking for solar panels in Oxfordshire? We install MCS-certified solar, battery storage and EV charging across the county — Oxford, Banbury and the villages between — from our East Midlands base. From survey to aftercare you deal with one firm, which matters most when a conservation or listed-building question needs a straight answer.

Expect £4,000–£10,000 installed for a typical system, with 0% VAT on domestic solar until 31 March 2027 and 0% finance if you would rather spread the cost.

One County, Two Kinds of Roof

Oxford is one of England's most conservation-designated cities, and that shapes solar there more than sunshine does. The Victorian terraces of East Oxford and Jericho usually take compact arrays, while the inter-war and post-war suburbs further out carry larger, simpler roofs. Jericho also carries an Article 4 direction that covers rooftop solar on a named list of streets, so panels there need planning permission. Our solar panels Oxford page goes street by street, and our Oxford conservation-area guide covers the rules.

North Oxfordshire is a different market. Banbury is the largest town in the north of the county, at the junction of the M40 and the A361, and Cherwell District Council has committed to net-zero by 2030. The town has Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Neithrop and Grimsbury and post-war estates at Ruscote and Easington; beyond it, Cotswold-fringe villages such as Bloxham, Adderbury and Deddington often have traditional stone-tile roofs, where mounting has to suit the covering and in-roof options are worth a look. Many rural homes there are off the gas grid, which gives a solar-plus-battery system more electricity use to offset.

What Solar Costs in Oxfordshire

In Oxfordshire the price of a solar system depends on size and property type and typically falls between £4,000 and £10,000. The roof covering matters too: stone-tile and conservation-sensitive roofs can call for specialist mounting or in-roof panels, which the survey prices before you commit:

WhatTypical cost
Solar panel system (size-dependent)£4,000–£10,000
Battery storage — Fox ESS (10-year warranty)from £3,500
Battery storage — SigEnergy (integrated EV charging)from £5,000
EV charger installation£950–£1,400
Air conditioning (single room)from £1,200 installed

The solar savings calculator sizes a system against your own usage, and the 2026 cost guide sets out prices system by system.

Planning, Conservation Areas and Paperwork

Many Oxfordshire houses need no planning application for solar: roof panels on a house are permitted development in England, and a conservation area restricts only panels on a wall, balcony or roof enclosure that fronts a highway, not roof slopes. Oxford is where the exceptions bite. Jericho's Article 4 direction (made 31 March 2011) removes permitted development rights for solar PV and solar thermal equipment on a dwellinghouse roof across a named list of streets, including Walton Street, Richmond Road and Great Clarendon Street, so panels there need planning permission. A flat-roof array in any conservation area needs prior approval, and listed homes need consent. In a county with this many conservation areas and listed buildings, that check is part of every survey we do.

Your network operator depends on where in the county you are, so we identify it from the MPAN on your bill rather than assume a boundary. We then handle the DNO notification, G98 for systems up to 3.68kW per phase or the G99 application for anything larger, before installation.

Funding and Export Income

No general solar grant exists, so the case rests on 0% VAT for domestic solar and batteries until 31 March 2027, 0% finance, and Smart Export Guarantee payments for exported power — the SEG rates guide has the current table. Off-gas village homes that add a battery can pair it with a time-of-use tariff too; the Octopus Flux guide explains how.

Solar in Oxfordshire: FAQs

A typical Oxfordshire installation costs £4,000–£10,000 depending on system size and property type, with the roof covering a further factor in North Oxfordshire's stone-tile villages. Battery storage adds from £3,500 (Fox ESS, 10-year warranty) or from £5,000 (SigEnergy, 15-year warranty, integrated EV charging). Domestic solar and batteries are 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, and the quote is fixed and itemised from a real survey.

Often not. Roof panels on a house are permitted development in England, and conservation areas only exclude panels on a wall, balcony or roof enclosure that fronts a highway. The real exception in Oxford is Jericho, where an Article 4 direction made in 2011 requires planning permission for rooftop solar on a named list of streets; flat-roof arrays in any conservation area need prior approval, and listed homes need consent. We check your address against all of these at the free survey and handle any application.

Our dedicated pages cover Oxford and Banbury — solar panels, battery storage, EV chargers and Tesla Powerwall — and we survey and install across the county, including the Cotswold-fringe villages of North Oxfordshire, from our East Midlands base.

Often yes, but the covering decides the method. Many Cotswold-fringe villages around Banbury have traditional stone-tile roofs, so mounting has to suit the covering, and in-roof systems that sit flush with the roof are worth considering for a more sympathetic look. Our structural survey checks the roof before any design is priced, and it is also when we check whether your village has a conservation area or Article 4 direction.
