Air Conditioning
Nottingham

Air conditioning installation in Nottingham for homes and small businesses. Reversible units cool in summer and heat efficiently in winter, and they can run on your own solar panels. We survey, quote a fixed price and handle the planning check for your address.

Air Conditioning in Nottingham: One Unit, Two Seasons

Energy Concerns installs reversible split air conditioning in Nottingham and across Nottinghamshire. The indoor unit hangs on a wall, the outdoor unit sits outside on a bracket or a ground stand, and a pipe run joins the two. In summer the system moves heat out of the room; in winter it reverses and brings heat in, using roughly one unit of electricity for every three or four units of heat.

Single-room systems start from £1,200 installed and multi-room systems from £2,500, with the final price fixed after a survey. The same service for neighbouring counties is on our air conditioning Leicester and air conditioning Northampton pages.

Nottingham Homes and Where the Heat Builds Up

The 2021 Census counts 124,745 households in Nottingham: 33.3% semi-detached, 27.4% terraced, 15.6% detached and 23.6% flats. 28.6% of households rent from a private landlord or agency (35,688 homes) and 38.0% have no car or van, so plenty of homes have little outdoor space to spare.

Sneinton, the Old Meadows and the red-brick terraces

Terraces laid out in the industrial era take a rear-wall bracket or a ground stand for the outdoor unit, and the Old Meadows has been a conservation area since June 2020. Top-floor bedrooms and attic rooms are the usual hot spots.

Sherwood and the lace-era streets

Sherwood’s late-Victorian and Edwardian homes were built as the lace industry grew between 1870 and 1910 and often have steeper roofs with rooms in them. A single-room unit for the loft or back bedroom is a sensible starting point.

Wollaton and Clifton

Wollaton has mid-20th-century suburban semis. In Clifton most houses are “no fines” concrete rather than brick, a non-standard wall, so fixings need checking before an outdoor-unit bracket goes up.

The Park, the Lace Market and Mapperley Park

These are conservation areas — The Park and the Lace Market since July 1969, Mapperley Park and Alexandra Park since July 1976 — so the siting rules further down apply. The Park is also a gated private estate managed by Nottingham Park Estate Ltd, so speak to the estate as well as the council.

What the Met Office Recorded Near Nottingham

The Met Office’s Nottingham Watnall station sets the ordinary July. The 2022 heatwave shows the extreme.

Nottingham Watnall, 1991–2020; it was 20.41°C in 1981–2010

Nottinghamshire: 1.4°C above the previous UK record and 18.5°C above its July average

The same Met Office report lists Coningsby in Lincolnshire at 40.3°C as the new UK record. A day like that is rare. The everyday July is the design case for a bedroom or home office; the report is a reminder of what a building has to cope with.

What Air Conditioning Costs in Nottingham

These are the starting points we quote from. The survey fixes the real number, and the quote is itemised.

JobWhat it coversFrom
One roomA bedroom, home office, loft or conservatory: one indoor unit, one outdoor unit, pipework, electrics and commissioning; about a day£1,200
Several roomsTwo to five indoor units from a single outdoor unit, each with its own control; one to two days£2,500

Guide prices from Energy Concerns quotes, not a price list. Longer pipe runs, more rooms, larger capacity and walls that need special fixings all add to the price.

Running Costs and VAT

Three numbers decide what air conditioning costs once the installer has gone:

  • Electricity. Ofgem’s East Midlands price cap is 25.36p per kWh on direct debit from 1 October to 31 December 2026, with no VAT on household electricity until 31 March 2027. A unit cooling one room typically draws 0.5–1 kW, which is roughly 13p to 25p an hour. The cap changes every quarter.
  • Heating mode. At three to four units of heat for each unit of electricity, a kWh of warmth costs about 6p to 8p, against the full 25.36p from an electric radiator.
  • VAT on the installation. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioning units as air source heat pumps. Installing one in residential accommodation is zero-rated until 31 March 2027 and 5% from 1 April 2027. Equipment bought without installation carries 20%, portable units do not qualify, and the relief does not cover business premises.

Solar panels change the first line: on a bright afternoon the unit can run on electricity from your own roof. Our solar panels Nottingham page covers the roof side, and the solar panels and air conditioning guide explains the sums.

Permission for an Outdoor Unit in Nottingham

In planning law an air conditioning unit with an outdoor part counts as an air source heat pump, and Class G of the national permitted development rules lets a householder fit one without an application provided that it is not used only for cooling (a reversible unit is covered; a cooling-only unit is not), the home is not a listed building, and the outdoor unit is under 1.5 cubic metres, is not on a pitched roof and meets the MCS Planning Standards, including a noise limit of 37.0 dB(A) at a neighbour’s window.

Nottingham City Council says the city has 33 conservation areas. In any of them the right does not stretch to a wall or roof that fronts a highway. The council’s list includes the Lace Market, The Park, Mapperley Park and Alexandra Park, Sneinton, the Old Meadows, Sherwood Rise, the Arboretum, Wollaton Park and Clifton Village. We check the boundary and the listed status of your address at the survey, and on The Park you should speak to the estate as well as the council.

Two further points from the council’s own pages. Its Article 4 page lists six property-specific directions — Devonshire Promenade, Foxhall Road, Sneinton, Strelley Village, Waterloo Promenade and Wellington Terrace — covering minor building work such as small extensions, outbuildings and changes to windows and doors; none of the direction pages we read mentions heat pumps or air conditioning, but check yours. And its informal conservation-area guidance note (2025 onwards) says new external runs of cables and pipes “will require permission in conservation areas”, so ask about the pipework route as well as the outdoor unit.

Grants: What Actually Qualifies

The one grant that reaches an air conditioning-type unit is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme’s £2,500 for an air-to-air heat pump, and it is narrow. The unit has to replace an existing fossil-fuel or electric heating system, the applicant has to own the property, and an MCS-certified installer makes the application. A home that keeps its boiler and simply adds cooling does not qualify. If a grant is the point of the project, ask the installer for their MCS listing for heat pumps before you rely on it.

How We Work

1

Survey

We measure the rooms, check the wall construction and where the outdoor unit can go, and look at the electrical supply.

2

Quote

One fixed, itemised price, with the planning check for your address done before you decide.

3

Install

Pipework, electrics and commissioning. A single room takes about a day; several rooms take one to two.

4

Handover

We set up the remote and the app, agree the schedules you want, and leave you a number to ring afterwards.

What “F-Gas Certified” Means

Air conditioning units contain fluorinated gas refrigerant, and the law is specific about who may work on them. GOV.UK guidance says anyone who handles F gas must hold personal qualifications, and a company that works on other people’s equipment must be certified by an approved body — for air conditioning, Refcom Certification, F-Gas Register (Quidos) or Bureau Veritas UK — and renew that certification every three years. Ask any installer for the company’s certificate number and its engineers’ qualifications before you sign.

Offices, Shops and Small Premises in Nottingham

The law sets no maximum temperature for workplaces; the Health and Safety Executive says so directly. Employers must provide a reasonable indoor temperature, and HSE’s approved code suggests at least 16°C indoors, or 13°C for physically demanding work. We survey commercial premises individually, and the zero-rate VAT relief above does not apply to them.

Frequently Asked Questions — Air Conditioning Nottingham

Single-room systems start from £1,200 installed and multi-room systems from £2,500, fixed after a survey. Longer pipe runs, more rooms, larger capacity and walls that need special fixings all add to the price, and commercial premises are quoted separately.

Usually not for a house, but the siting matters. An air conditioning unit with an outdoor part counts as an air source heat pump, and Class G permits one provided it is not used only for cooling, the home is not listed, the outdoor unit is under 1.5 cubic metres and meets the MCS Planning Standards, and, in a conservation area, it is not on a wall or roof that fronts a highway. Nottingham City Council lists 33 conservation areas, its conservation-area guidance note says new external cable and pipe runs will require permission, and The Park is a gated private estate with its own management, so we check your address at the survey and you should ask the council about the pipework route.

Only with your landlord’s written permission. A fixed unit means drilling through an external wall and fitting equipment to the building, so check your tenancy agreement and ask before any work starts. 28.6% of Nottingham households rent privately, so this comes up often.

For a home, yes until 31 March 2027: HMRC treats most fixed air conditioning units as air source heat pumps, and installation in residential accommodation is zero-rated until then and 5% from 1 April 2027. Equipment bought without installation is 20%, portable units do not qualify, and the relief does not cover business premises.

A unit cooling one room typically draws 0.5 to 1 kW. At Ofgem’s East Midlands cap of 25.36p per kWh (1 October to 31 December 2026, no VAT on household electricity until 31 March 2027) that is roughly 13p to 25p an hour, and heating costs about 6p to 8p per kWh of heat at three to four units of heat per unit of electricity. The cap changes every quarter.

Only through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which pays £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces an existing fossil-fuel or electric heating system in a property you own, with an MCS-certified installer making the application. Adding cooling to a home that keeps its boiler does not qualify.

The Met Office recorded 40.1°C at Gringley-on-the-Hill, Nottinghamshire, on 19 July 2022, which was 18.5°C above its July long-term average. The Nottingham Watnall station’s ordinary July averages 21.49°C for the daily maximum (1991 to 2020), up from 20.41°C in 1981 to 2010.

GOV.UK guidance says anyone who handles F gas must hold personal qualifications, and a company working on other people’s equipment must be certified by an approved body such as Refcom Certification, F-Gas Register (Quidos) or Bureau Veritas UK, renewing every three years.
