Milton Keynes was planned as a city of grid squares, and the housing built in them turns out to be a sweet spot for solar: unshaded, regular roof planes laid out in an era of generous plot spacing.

What makes grid-square roofs work
Two things do the work. Regular roof planes mean mounting is straightforward and arrays can be laid out cleanly; generous plot spacing means little overshading from neighbouring buildings. Milton Keynes also has the youngest housing stock of any city we cover, so roof structures are modern and predictable. The survey still measures the orientation, shading and structure of your actual roof — the grid-square pattern is why that survey usually has good news in it.
Where Milton Keynes is different
Not every Milton Keynes roof is a grid-square roof. Wolverton and New Bradwell have Victorian railway terraces and Stony Stratford has older coaching-town streets, and these take more carefully placed, compact arrays. Bletchley’s post-war estates, including the Lakes Estate and Water Eaton, sit between the two, while Shenley Lodge is modern family housing. Different streets, different systems — the survey decides, not a postcode average.
The local context
Milton Keynes City Council’s stated goal is a carbon-neutral city by 2030 (and carbon negative by 2050), and it co-runs Home Energy MK, a local home-energy advice service delivered with Wolverton Community Energy and the National Energy Foundation. That advice is independent of any installer and worth using for efficiency upgrades alongside solar.
None of it pays for panels, though. The levers that do are 0% VAT on domestic solar and batteries until 31 March 2027, Smart Export Guarantee payments for what you export (our SEG rates guide tracks the current table) and, with a battery, a time-of-use tariff — see the Octopus Flux guide.
Costs and the next step
Systems typically cost £4,000–£10,000 depending on system size and property type, with battery storage from £3,500 (Fox ESS) or £5,000 (SigEnergy) and 0% finance over 12 months available. The cost table, FAQs and survey booking are on our solar panels Milton Keynes page. To get a first estimate, try the solar savings calculator, or read how many solar panels you need.

Usually not: roof-mounted solar on a house is permitted development in England. The exceptions are narrow — a listed home, an Article 4 direction on your street, or, in a conservation area, a flat-roof array (which needs prior approval) or panels on a wall facing the street. We check your address at survey.
The survey measures your actual roof planes, shading and structure and designs to your usage. The solar calculator gives a first estimate before you book, and our guide to how many solar panels you need walks through the maths.
