Air Conditioning in Northampton: What We Install
Energy Concerns fits inverter-driven split systems in Northampton and across Northamptonshire: a wall-mounted indoor unit, or several, connected to one outdoor unit on a wall or a ground stand. Every unit we install is reversible, so the system that cools a bedroom in July heats it efficiently in November.
That second job is why HMRC treats most fixed air conditioning units as air source heat pumps for VAT, and why the planning rules on this page are the heat-pump rules. In heating mode a modern split system typically delivers three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity it uses.
We survey first, then quote a fixed, itemised price: units, pipework, electrical work, commissioning and F-gas certification are all in it. Elsewhere in the region the same service is on our air conditioning Leicester and air conditioning Nottingham pages.
What Air Conditioning Costs in Northampton
Prices depend on how many rooms you want cooled, the capacity of the units, the pipework route and how far the outdoor unit sits from the indoor one. These are the starting points we quote from; the survey fixes the real number.
| System | Typical use | Installed from |
|---|---|---|
| Single room (mono-split) | Bedroom, home office, loft conversion or conservatory; 2.5–5.0 kW, rooms up to about 35 sqm; about a day to fit | £1,200 |
| Multi-room (multi-split) | 2 to 5 rooms from one outdoor unit, each room controlled separately; one to two days to fit | £2,500 |
| Shop, office or clinic | Surveyed individually, because loads differ so much between a server cupboard, a treatment room and a shop floor | Priced after a survey |

What It Costs to Run in Northampton
Ofgem’s price cap for the East Midlands, which includes Northampton, is 25.36p per kWh on direct debit from 1 October to 31 December 2026, and there is no VAT on household electricity until 31 March 2027. Here is what that means for a typical unit:
25.36p
per kWh, East Midlands cap
Ofgem, direct debit, single-rate electricity, 1 Oct–31 Dec 2026
13–25p
an hour to cool one room
A typical unit draws 0.5–1 kW; worked out from the cap rate
6–8p
per kWh of heat in winter
25.36p divided by the 3–4 units of heat per unit of electricity we quote
An electric radiator turns one unit of electricity into one unit of heat, so every kWh of warmth costs the full 25.36p. The gap narrows in hard frost, when heat pump efficiency falls, and the cap changes every quarter. With solar panels, the daytime share of the running cost can come from your own roof instead.
Which Northampton Homes Overheat
The 2021 Census counts 172,638 households in West Northamptonshire, the council area that includes Northampton: 31.7% detached, 31.6% semi-detached, 23.1% terraced and 13.2% flats. The rooms that need cooling follow the house type.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
Abington, Kingsley and Far Cotton are terrace country. In streets like these the top-floor bedroom and the converted loft are the usual hot spots, and the outdoor unit generally goes on a rear wall or a ground stand because side access is tight.
Estates from the 1970s onwards
East and West Hunsbury and the newer parts of Duston, including Alsace Park, St Giles Park and St Crispins, are detached and semi-detached family homes. Conservatories and extensions are the rooms that overheat first, and space for an outdoor unit is rarely the problem.
Converted factories and flats
The Boot and Shoe Quarter is a conservation area designated in 2011, and the council’s 2011 appraisal records former factories there, such as Grove Works, now in residential use as flats. A flat usually needs the freeholder’s or management company’s consent for an outdoor unit, and the siting rules below apply too.
Offices, shops and clinics
Small commercial premises are surveyed individually. The VAT relief described further down covers homes and charitable buildings, not business premises, so ask for the quote to be broken down.
How Hot Does Northampton Get?
The Met Office keeps a climate station at Moulton Park in Northampton, so the local baseline is a measured one. The record days show how far a hot spell can go.
22.05°C
July average daily maximum
Moulton Park, 1991–2020; it was 20.57°C in 1981–2010
198 hours
of sunshine in an average July
Moulton Park, 1991–2020; 1,520 hours across the year
40.2°C
at Pitsford on 19 July 2022
A Midlands regional record in the Met Office heatwave report
Pitsford is a village north of Northampton, and the report gives no reading for the town itself. Northamptonshire has hot history, too: the former UK record of 36.7°C was set at Raunds on 9 August 1911. Rooms under a roof and conservatories can run hotter than the weather outside, which is why a single-room unit is often the right place to start.
Planning Permission for an Outdoor Unit in Northampton
For planning purposes an air conditioning unit with an outdoor part is an air source heat pump. Under Class G of the permitted development rules for England, a householder can fit one without a planning application when these conditions are met:
- the unit is not used solely for cooling — every reversible unit we fit also heats, so it falls under the heat-pump right, whereas a cooling-only unit sits outside it and the council should be asked first;
- the property is not a listed building;
- the outdoor unit is no bigger than 1.5 cubic metres, is not on a pitched roof, and meets the MCS Planning Standards, which set a noise limit of 37.0 dB(A) at the nearest neighbour’s window or door; the right covers one unit on most houses and two on a detached house;
- in a conservation area or World Heritage Site, it is not on a wall or roof that fronts a highway.
West Northamptonshire has 117 conservation areas, and the council’s list includes Abington Park, All Saints, Billing Road, Derngate, Kingsley, Kingsthorpe, St Giles and the Boot and Shoe Quarter. Several of those areas also carry older Article 4 directions, made before the heat-pump right existed. Whether one applies to your address is a question for the council’s planning team, and we check it at the survey.
VAT and Grants on Air Conditioning in Northampton
VAT. HMRC’s understanding is that most air conditioning units are air source heat pumps, and installing fixed units in residential accommodation is zero-rated until 31 March 2027; from 1 April 2027 the rate reverts to 5%. The relief covers the installation, not equipment supplied on its own (which is standard-rated at 20%), and portable units do not qualify. It applies to homes and charitable buildings, so a shop or office quote is treated differently.
Grants. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump, but only where it replaces an existing fossil-fuel or electric heating system and the applicant owns the property. An MCS-certified installer makes the application, so ask any installer to show their MCS listing for heat pumps before relying on it. Adding cooling to a home that keeps its boiler does not qualify.
Solar-Powered Air Conditioning in Northampton
Cooling demand peaks on bright afternoons, which is exactly when solar panels generate most. With 198 hours of sunshine in an average Moulton Park July, an array on a south-facing roof can cover much of the daytime load; add a battery and the evening can run on stored solar as well.
The roof side of the sum — costs, conservation areas and funding — is on our solar panels Northampton page, and the solar panels and air conditioning guide walks through the numbers.
How an Air Conditioning Job Runs
We survey the rooms
We measure each room, check where the indoor and outdoor units can go, plan the pipework route and look at the electrical supply. If you have solar panels, we design the system around them.
You get one fixed quote
Units, pipework, electrical work, commissioning and F-gas certification are itemised on a single page, with the planning check for your address done before you decide.
We fit and commission
Our engineers fit the indoor units, run the refrigerant pipework, make the electrical connection and commission the system. A single room takes about a day.
We hand over
We show you the remote and the app, set the schedules you want and stay on the end of the phone if something needs adjusting.
Offices, Shops and Small Premises in Northampton
UK law sets no maximum workplace temperature. The Health and Safety Executive says so plainly: employers must provide a reasonable indoor temperature, and its approved code suggests at least 16°C for indoor work, or 13°C where much of the work is physically demanding. What counts as reasonable is the employer’s judgement, which makes air conditioning in a Northampton office, clinic or shop a comfort and productivity decision rather than a compliance box.
We survey commercial premises individually and quote them separately from homes. Business installations are not covered by the VAT relief described above.
Frequently Asked Questions — Air Conditioning Northampton
Single-room systems start from £1,200 installed and multi-room systems from £2,500. The final price is fixed after a survey and depends on the number of rooms, the capacity of the units, the pipework route and the electrical work. Commercial premises are surveyed and quoted individually.
Usually not for a house. For planning purposes an air conditioning unit is an air source heat pump, and Class G of the permitted development rules allows one if it is not used solely for cooling, the property is not a listed building, the outdoor unit is no bigger than 1.5 cubic metres and meets the MCS Planning Standards, and, in a conservation area, it is not on a wall or roof that fronts a highway. West Northamptonshire has 117 conservation areas and some carry older Article 4 directions, so we check your address at the survey.
Installing a fixed air conditioning unit in residential accommodation is zero-rated until 31 March 2027, then 5% from 1 April 2027, because HMRC treats most fixed units as air source heat pumps. Equipment supplied without installation is standard-rated at 20%, portable units do not qualify, and the relief does not extend to business premises.
Only in one case. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump, but it must replace an existing fossil-fuel or electric heating system, the applicant must own the property and an MCS-certified installer makes the application. Adding cooling to a home that keeps its boiler does not qualify.
A typical unit draws 0.5 to 1 kW when cooling one room. At Ofgem’s East Midlands price cap of 25.36p per kWh (1 October to 31 December 2026, with no VAT on household electricity until 31 March 2027) that is roughly 13p to 25p an hour. In winter, three to four units of heat per unit of electricity works out at about 6p to 8p per kWh of heat. The cap changes every quarter.
Yes. Cooling demand peaks on sunny afternoons, when solar panels generate most, so an array can cover much of the daytime load. A battery extends that into the evening. We design the array and the air conditioning together when both are being fitted.
The Met Office’s Moulton Park station in Northampton averages a daily maximum of 22.05°C in July (1991 to 2020), up from 20.57°C in 1981 to 2010. On 19 July 2022 Pitsford, north of the town, recorded 40.2°C, a Midlands regional record.
No. The Health and Safety Executive says there is no maximum temperature for workplaces, but employers must provide a reasonable indoor temperature. Its approved code suggests at least 16°C for indoor work, or 13°C where much of the work is physically demanding.
