Ballasted or A-frame? How we mount panels at 10 to 15 degrees
There are two ways we mount panels on a flat roof, and choosing between them is most of the design work. Ballasted systems sit the panels in shaped trays or consoles that are weighed down with ballast blocks. Nothing is drilled, screwed or bonded into your roof covering — the membrane stays completely untouched, which matters enormously on a felt or EPDM roof you'd rather not puncture. The trays are aerodynamically shaped so wind flows over rather than under them, keeping the ballast weight sensible. A-frames are rigid triangular frames that hold panels at a fixed tilt. We use them where we want a specific angle, or where the roof can't carry much ballast weight — in which case the frames are mechanically fixed instead, with every fixing properly flashed and weatherproofed by our own roofing team. Why 10 to 15 degrees? It's the sweet spot. Enough tilt for rain to wash the panels clean, a low profile that keeps wind uplift down, and tight row spacing so one row doesn't shade the next — meaning more panels, and more energy, from the same roof.Weight, wind and the membrane: what our survey actually checks
Flat-roof solar done properly starts with three questions: can the roof carry the weight, will the wind leave it alone, and how long has the membrane got left? We answer the first two with a proper assessment, not guesswork. Our drone survey photographs and measures your roof safely — no ladders, no scaffold, no walking on a deck we haven't assessed yet. From that we work out the dead load of panels plus ballast against what your roof structure can carry (a 1970s garage and a modern warm-deck extension are very different animals), and we zone the ballast plan for wind uplift, because the corners and edges of a flat roof see far stronger gusts than the middle. The third question is where we're genuinely different. If your felt or EPDM is near the end of its life, it makes no sense to sit 25-plus years of solar on top of it. A pitched roof facing east-west loses far more than a few percent against ideal — while on your flat roof, every single row points due south. In practice, a well-designed flat-roof array often out-produces the compromised pitched roof next door. Where a roof can't carry enough ballast and A-frames need mechanical fixings, every penetration is flashed and weatherproofed by our own in-house roofing team — the same people who'd re-roof it — so it's done properly, not left to chance.
That's exactly what our survey answers before we quote. Ballast adds real weight, and a 1970s garage deck is a very different structure to a modern warm-deck extension. We assess what your roof can carry and zone the ballast for wind uplift at the edges and corners. If ballast is too heavy for the structure, a fixed A-frame system is usually the answer — and if the roof isn't up to it at all, we'll tell you straight.
