Shrewsbury’s inner suburbs are a slate town: the Victorian terraces built 1860–1900 that dominate Belle Vue, Copthorne and Castlefields are predominantly roofed in Welsh slate. Slate is a perfectly workable roof for solar, but it is the covering where the survey matters most.

Why slate needs a different approach
Slate is thin, hard and brittle — old slate more so. It cannot be walked on like concrete tile without risk of cracking, and it keeps the rain out through overlapping courses that any fixing has to respect. So the questions on a slate roof are different: what condition are the slates and the battens beneath in, where are the rafters, and how will each fixing be flashed so the roof stays watertight?
Belle Vue and Copthorne are typically roofed in Ffestiniog blue-grey slate, which is one reason a survey beats an assumption: it records what is actually on your roof.
How panels are fixed to slate
Panels sit on rails held by brackets that fix to the roof structure, not to the slates themselves. On slate that normally means purpose-made hook-style brackets that slip beneath the slates and fix to the rafters, or properly flashed fixings where a slate has to be lifted and replaced. Which suits your roof depends on its pitch, the slate size and the condition of the structure — which is why our structural survey specifies slate-appropriate fixings before any design is priced.
Slate, conservation streets and planning
Many of Shrewsbury’s terraced streets sit inside the conservation area. That does not by itself stop roof panels: in England the national rule for conservation areas only excludes panels on a wall, balcony or roof enclosure that fronts a highway, so roof slopes — including street-facing ones — are not restricted by it. What can change the answer is an Article 4 direction on your street, a flat-roof array (which needs prior approval from the council) or a listed home. We check the boundary and any direction for your address as part of every survey.
What it costs, and pairing a battery
Slate adds survey and fitting care; the quote stays fixed and itemised, so any slate-specific work shows as a line rather than a surprise. Systems typically cost £4,000–£10,000 depending on system size and property type, at 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. Full local pricing is on our solar panels Shrewsbury page.
If you are adding storage, our battery storage Shrewsbury page covers sizing, and the Octopus Flux guide explains the time-of-use tariffs that let a battery earn its keep.

Not if the mounting is designed for slate and fitted with care — that is what the structural survey is for. It checks the condition of the slates and the structure beneath, and specifies slate-appropriate fixings before any design is priced.
Slate can add survey and fitting time, but the quote is fixed and itemised, so any slate-specific work is visible rather than a surprise extra. Typical systems run £4,000–£10,000 depending on system size and property type.
