Solar Panels on
New Build Homes
The Future Homes Standard, what developers offer vs what you can get independently, and the best time to add solar to your new home.
Why New Builds Are Ideal for Solar
New build homes have several properties that make them outstanding solar investments:
Modern roof design
New builds are typically designed with energy efficiency in mind. South-facing roof slopes, standard pitches, and minimal obstructions make panel placement straightforward.
No roof condition risk
No old asbestos tiles, no deteriorating felt, no structural concerns. A new roof is guaranteed to outlast the solar panels.
Higher electricity demand
Modern homes with heat pumps, EV chargers, and home offices use more electricity than older homes. A 4–6kW solar system can cover a significant portion of this consumption.
Solar-ready cabling
Many developers now install conduit for cable routing from roof to consumer unit. This can reduce installation time and cost significantly.
The Future Homes Standard
The Future Homes Standard came into effect in 2025 and requires new homes to produce 75–80% fewer carbon emissions than properties built to 2013 standards. For many developers, this means solar panels are now standard on new homes.
However, the Future Homes Standard does not specify how developers must achieve the emissions target — some use solar panels, others rely on high-spec insulation and heat pumps. If your new build was completed before 2025, check whether solar is fitted before purchasing.
Key question to ask your developer: "Is this property solar-ready? Is conduit fitted for solar cable routing, and has the roof been designed for south-facing panel installation?" These questions cost nothing and could save you hundreds in installation costs later.
Developer Solar vs Independent Installation
| Factor | Developer Option | Energy Concerns |
|---|---|---|
| System size | Often small (2–3kW) | Right-sized for your needs |
| Panel quality | Often entry-level | Premium: Aiko N-Type ABC |
| Battery option | Rarely included | GivEnergy / SigEnergy / Tesla |
| MCS certification | May be developer-certified | Always MCS certified |
| Cost vs value | Often overpriced vs spec | Competitive, transparent pricing |
| Timing | During build only | Anytime after completion |
