EV Charger Grants in the West Midlands: OZEV & Local Schemes 2025

What EV charger grants are available for West Midlands homeowners in 2025? We cover the OZEV grant, local council schemes in Birmingham, Coventry, Solihull, Redditch, and Leamington Spa, and how to claim.

The West Midlands has one of the highest rates of EV adoption in England outside London — driven by the region's car manufacturing heritage (Jaguar Land Rover in Solihull, the former Longbridge site, and numerous suppliers), Clean Air Zone charges in Birmingham city centre, and strong professional commuter culture across the M40, M6, and M42 corridors. For homeowners looking to install an EV charger in Birmingham, Coventry, Solihull, Redditch, Leamington Spa, or surrounding areas, here's a complete guide to available grants and schemes in 2025.

The OZEV Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS)

The OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme provides up to £350 toward the cost of a home EV charger installation. This is a national scheme administered through approved OZEV installers — Energy Concerns is OZEV-approved and handles the application process on your behalf.

Who qualifies:

  • You own, lease (6+ months), or have placed an order for a qualifying EV or plug-in hybrid
  • You have off-street parking (driveway, garage, or allocated parking space)
  • You rent or own your property (tenants need landlord permission)
  • The charge point must be a 'smart' charger compatible with OZEV requirements

The grant applies to the Hypervolt Home 3, Zappi V2, and other approved chargers we install. The £350 is deducted directly from your installation invoice — you never handle the grant money yourself.

Local Schemes in the West Midlands

Birmingham City Council

Birmingham's Clean Air Zone charges petrol vehicles manufactured before 2006 and diesel vehicles before 2015 £8/day to drive in the city centre. The council has accelerated EV infrastructure deployment and supports the national EVHS grant. Birmingham does not currently operate a separate local EV charger grant, but the CAZ financial incentive to switch to an EV is substantial — and the EVHS grant reduces the charger cost accordingly.

West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA)

The WMCA has invested in public charging infrastructure across the region. For residential installations, the national EVHS grant is the primary support mechanism. The WMCA's Transport for West Midlands strategy targets 100,000 public charge points by 2030, increasing the case for home charging as a complement to the public network.

Coventry City Council

Coventry has an active EV infrastructure programme and was one of the UK's first cities to deploy a kerb-side EV charging network (CoventryConnect). For homeowners with off-street parking, the EVHS grant applies. Coventry City Council also supports the national Workplace Charging Scheme for businesses.

Warwickshire (Leamington Spa, Stratford, Rugby)

Warwickshire County Council supports the Warwickshire EV Charging Strategy, which focuses on public and rapid charging. For residential installations, the national EVHS grant is the primary mechanism. Warwick District Council (covering Leamington Spa) has committed to supporting low-carbon transport as part of its climate emergency response.

How Much Does a Home EV Charger Cost in the West Midlands?

A Hypervolt Home 3 (7kW smart charger) installed by Energy Concerns typically costs:

  • Standard installation (single-phase supply, no cable run issues): £750–£950 including OZEV grant deduction
  • Extended cable run or consumer unit upgrade required: £1,100–£1,400 including OZEV grant deduction
  • Combined with solar panel installation: Significant labour cost savings as scaffolding and electrician visits are shared

Solar Diversion: Making the Most of Your EV Charger

If you're installing an EV charger alongside solar panels, a Zappi V2 charger offers a significant additional advantage over standard OZEV-eligible chargers: solar diversion. The Zappi automatically detects when your solar panels are generating more electricity than your home is using and diverts the surplus directly into your EV — at effectively 0p/kWh rather than the grid rate of 28p/kWh.

For a typical West Midlands commuter doing 10,000 miles annually, solar diversion via Zappi can cover 40–60% of annual EV charging between April and September, saving £600–£1,200 per year on electricity compared to grid-only charging. Energy Concerns installs Zappi V2 chargers and configures solar diversion as part of every combined solar + EV installation.
